PROJECT STATEMENT

Flotsam Jetsam consists of a raft constructed out of 450 balls I collected on 3 separate jogs over a 3-week period in the Bolsa Chica and Los Cerritos wetlands located in the Long Beach area. Dressed in a costume made entirely of balls, I stand-up paddled the raft 2 miles from Los Cerritos through Alamitos Bay to the ocean. In addition to concerns with coastal pollution and the consumption apocalypse-to-come, the piece deals with ideas of delusion, fantasy, and kinetics. Aqua-planing off stereotypes of island cast-aways, Flotsam Jetsam details a desperate young girl's flight from the broken sump of the LA basin. Stranded in an urban setting she strikes out alone toward a horizon cluttered with oil tankers and yachts on a craft made of washed-up balls abandoned in the wetlands.
