PORT-TO-CLASS SUPERCOMMUTE:
ENVIRONMENTAL ART PROJECT LAUNCHED BY CSULB GRADUATE STUDENT

8 weeks of human powered commutes from the Port of LA in San Pedro to Long Beach State

For the next 8 weeks CSULB Masters of Fine Arts student Sierra Brown is determined to commute to her Monday night class by various modes of non-motorized transport.  With depleting resources and increasing fuel costs, Sierra Brown will be commuting by almost every imaginable human-powered method, including razor scootering, sailing, swimming, and a surprise mystery commute.   "I'm anticipating the swim to be difficult", she states. "The water temperature is currently only 58°F, well below average, and water pollution is equally dangerous.  I will be swimming 11miles nonstop through shipping lanes, currents, and changing tides, and I still have to be alert for my 7-10 pm class."  Yet, the 16-mile land route through Wilmington also has its dangers, including heavy semi-truck traffic and nude bars.  The project will culminate with a gallery exhibition and a published book including maps, finish times, and photographs.

11 Mile Swim to Class: 7am Monday, October 1st at Ports o' Call Village

Commutes start each week at 7am as follows:
10/08/07          16m Bike
10/15/07          16m Rollerblade
10/22/07          11m Paddle
10/29/07          16m Extreme Razor Scooter
11/05/07          16m Run
11/12/07          11m Sail
11/19/07          ? m Mystery Commute
